A Landscape-Based Regional Design Approach for Sustainable Urban Development in the Pearl River Delta, China

Adaptive urban transformations employ landscape-based regional design as an integrative and multiscale planning approach for sustainable development. In this approach, natural dynamics derived from systems analysis set the pace nature of adaptation. This chapter presents initial strategy adaptive transformation in Pearl River Delta to illustrate potential form territorial governance that takes landscape basis steer urban–rural transformative processes through a combination sector activities towards more coordinated outcomes. The strategic spatial plan subsequent implementation by means pilot projects will focus on interlinked economic ecological development at multiple scales. Together with assessment growth over time evaluation current region, several significant factors future have been identified, leading vision perspectives PRD. is based idea PRD develop into China's Silicon Valley, strongly developed well-connected qualities, robust green–blue frameworks, cultural-historical assets connected region water-sensitive socio-ecological inclusive urbanism.
